This was a computational study I collaborated on. The kinetic selectivity shown between these two stereoisomeric substrates can be explained by looking at their Newman Projections, a topic we learn in Organic Chemistry 1.

Why do students struggle in Organic Chemistry?

In my experience, most students struggle because they don't spend enough time mastering formal charges, resonance, and curved-arrow mechanisms at the beginning of the course.

These topics form the language of organic chemistry. When students haven’t mastered that language, they rely on rote memorization rather than understanding, leading them to answer questions illogically or by violating basic structural rules.

The crux of the issue is that exam questions in these challenging programs are specifically designed to test understanding rather than memorization. Students may be asked to predict unfamiliar reactions, identify competing products, or explain why one mechanism is favored over another. Without a strong foundation, these questions can feel impossible.

That's why every student who works with Élite O-Chem Tutoring begins by developing a solid understanding of formal charges, bonding, resonance structures, and reaction mechanisms, regardless of the chapter they're currently studying.

Once students learn to think through reactions logically, organic chemistry becomes much more manageable. We aim to build a framework that allows a student to self-study effectively throughout the entire course.
